Shoeing Smith John Harnett

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present, other than that, at some point after the war, he lived at Dromara, County Down.

John Harnett enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 19 or 20 January 1915 (No.1410 – later Corps of Hussars No.71377). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve depot before embarking for France on 17 November 1915 with F Squadron, which at the time was serving as divisional cavalry to the 33rd Division.

It is probable that at some point before mid-1917 he returned to the UK, either sick or injured, and later resumed duty at the Antrim camp.

Harnett remained with the regiment until the end of the war, though whether he saw any further overseas service is not known. On 1 May 1919 he was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.
